Lay Ministers’ Schedule (June-Sept 2010)

Saint Catherine of Siena, Our Patroness

admin April 21st, 2010

Feast Day is Thursday, April 29
Holy Masses: 7:45am and 7:15pm in the church

Imagine the pope receiving a young woman still in her twenties who addresses him as “my sweet Christ on earth,” then orders: “Get back to Rome where you belong!” Amazingly, Gregory XI complied! Yet this was but one astonishing incident in the extraordinary life of Catherine of Siena, a truly unique medieval woman. Youngest of twenty-five children, Catherine refused marriage and became a Dominican Tertiary at sixteen, cloistering herself at home in contemplative prayer, austere penances, and mystical experiences, culminating in “spiritual espousal” to Christ. Then, incarnating the Dominican ideal of “passing on to others the fruits of contemplation,” Catherine left her solitude to care for the poor, nurse the sick, comfort the dying, and bury the dead. Increasingly renowned for converting souls and healing bodies, she was sought after to broker peace during civil wars and Church schisms. All this, and like Jesus, whom she called “my “Divine Spouse,” she died at thirty-three! Four hundred letters and her spiritual classic The Dialogue inspired Paul VI to name her, together with Teresa of Ávila, the first women “doctors of the Church.”

Lenten Communal Penance Service

admin March 15th, 2010

This year’s Lenten Communal Penance service will be on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 7:00pm

A Gentle Guide for Penance
The basic requirement for a good confession is to have the intention of returning to God like the “prodigal son” and to acknowledge our sins with true sorrow before the priest. Remember, if you need help–especially if you have been away for some time–simply ask the priest and he will help you by “walking” you through the steps to make a good confession.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) is an integral part of Lenten and Easter seasons. If we, as a community, celebrate the loving presence of Christ in the Eucharist, it would be beautiful if we can also celebrate the forgiving presence of Christ in a Communal Penance service. We beg for God’s forgiveness and we receive the grace to forgive one another. If God accepts us as we are, we also accept one another as brothers and sisters.

We are inviting and encouraging all parishioners to make time for this penance service.

An Act of Contrition
“O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell. But most of all because I have offended you, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance and to amend my life.
Amen.”

The following is an excerpts from Bishop Soto’s “2010 Lenten Regulations and Admonitions”:

ALMSGIVING. The act of giving to the poor, in the most ancient tradition of the Church, is an expression of penance, a form of piety, a witness of fraternal charity and an expression of Lenten conversion. Therefore, all Catholics are urged to support generously the charitable works of the Church, including ordinary stewardship to their parish; generous response to the 20th Annual Catholic Appeal; and contribution to the Diocesan Food Bowl. People are also encouraged to assist the sick, the aged, the needy and the imprisoned in other ways. Fasting and abstinence together with works of charity help Catholics live in solidarity with the crucified Christ reflected in the image of our brothers and sisters who suffer.

This week’s Lenten Schedule

admin February 16th, 2010

February 17th, Ash Wednesday:

Holy Mass schedules: 7:45 am, 9:00 am, 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm
Vigil with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, adoration from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm.

February 19th, First Friday of Lent:

Evening of prayer for Vocations. Holy Hour and Scriptural Rosary at 6:00 pm. Stations of the Cross (Way of the Cross) at 7:00 pm. Holy Mass at 7:30 pm.

The following is an excerpts from Bishop Soto’s “2010 Lenten Regulations and Admonitions”.

FAST AND ABSTINENCE (self-denial). To foster the spirit of penance and of reparation for sin, to encourage self-denial, and to guide us in the footsteps of Jesus, Church law requires the observance of fast and abstinence (CCC, nos. 1249-1253).

Abstinence: All persons who have already celebrated their 14th birthday are bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent.

Fasting: Everyone, from the celebration of their 18th birthday to their 59th birthday, is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Voluntary fasting on other weekdays of Lent, especially on Wednesdays and Fridays, is highly recommended. Fasting is generally understood to mean eating one full meal each day. Two other partial meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken; but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Other forms of fasting, especially regarding alcoholic drink, needless television, video games, Internet use and social entertainment, is of true spiritual value and is strongly encouraged. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, neither the law of fasting nor the law of abstinence obliges. If in doubt, ones parish priest or confessor may be consulted. Airport workers, travelers, and others while on board ships or airplanes are dispensed from the laws of fast and abstinence for the duration of their journey (except on Good Friday). It is desirable that they perform some other pious act instead.

Ringing of Bells During Consecration

Angelo May 31st, 2009

I believe that bringing back the ringing of bells during the elevation of the Blessed Eucharist is a great idea. For me, the ringing of bells reminds me that the consecration is a very important part of Mass. Although I try very hard to have full attention and awareness throughout the service, my mind do wander and at times need to be reawaken, especially at the moment of consecration. The ringing of bells will call to mind that something very special and sacred is happening at the altar.

It is also a welcome addition for my children. My two girls, 8 and 10 year olds who’s attention span are short, will now have cues to look up and acknowledge Jesus in the appearance of the elevated bread and wine. I no longer need to nudge them and remind them at the moment of consecration (or at least the reminders will be less frequent). For my family and for families similar to mine, I hope that the ringing of bells will return to St. Catherine as an extra aid to call attention to the moment of the consecration.

(While the intention is to have an “unofficial survey” of parishioners about thoughts and ideas, concerns and implications regarding the “ringing of bells during Mass” the venue for such parishioner sharing and exchange of reflections will not be in the Parish Bulletin insert, but here in the St. Catherine’s website. There might be diversity in opinion, but there should always be unity in principle, which is love. Post your thoughts by clicking on “Comments” below.)
