Ash Wednesday begins the penitential Lenten season, a period of preparation to celebrate the Lord's Resurrection at Easter. It is also an obligatory day of fasting (ages 18-59) and abstinence from meat (ages 14+) for Catholics.
The ashes are traditionally prepared by burning the palm leaves from the previous year's Palm Sunday. They are also a solemn reminder of human mortality and the need for reconciliation with God.
Ashes will be blessed and imposed during Mass, sprinkled them on the head of each person. The imposition of ashes will also be available outside of Mass, upon request or by ringing the Rectory doorbell.
